Vocabulary for location in space

In order to be able to specify our position or the position of objects in relation to other people or objects, we need to know a bit of vocabulary.

the front

the back

the top

the bottom

아래

the side

the side (of someone)

the opposite side

맞은편

the other side of the street

건너편

the left

왼쪽

the right

오른쪽

the center

가운데

the middle of

한가운데

the inside

the outside

층이 너무 시끄러워요.
→ The floor above is too noisy.

민지는 동민이의 집에 살아요.
→ Minji lives next to Dongmin. (lit: Minji lives next to the house of Dongmin.)

저는 항상 가방을 오른쪽 어깨에 메요.
→ I always carry my bag on my right shoulder.

저는 왼손잡이예요.
→ I am left-handed.

To be located in space

Adding the place particle 에 to each of these words will permit us to indicate the location of an object or person. In this way, the following words are obtained:

in front (of)

앞에

behind

뒤에

on, above

위에

under, below

아래에

next to

옆에

next to (someone)

곁에

across from

맞은편에

on the other side of the street

건너편에

to the left (of)

왼쪽에

to the right (of)

오른쪽에

in the center (of)

가운데에

in the middle (of)

한가운데에

inside (of)

안에

outside (of)

밖에

Note: unlike in English, these words are placed after the noun they relate to.
